  • Neck Surgery....

So DH has been struggling with back pains off and on for quite some time in the last 6 months or so it got really bad.
After two trips to the ER, one trip to our health clinic (don't get me started there - what a bunch of idiots), a trip to an orthopedist that we set up (saw a spinal doc), an MRI, a trip to a new GP, physical therapy (ongoing) and an appointment with a neck specialist we have discovered the following:

He has spinal stenosis. Has been having some issues with balance and dexterity and it is all tied to this. It is bad enough that the specialist is recommending surgery to remove bone spurs and add spacers to stabilize his neck. Has assured us that this is a common surgery and is VERY successful at relieving pain and slowing/stopping any more degeneration. He also said that not doing anything is worse than the surgery and recovery. Has said that he will have around 3 months before he should be totally recovered, but should be back to mostly normal activity in a week or so, but will possibly have to wear a neck brace for a month or so. The previous spinal doc warned us surgery was likely so it's not just one doc saying this.

DH is very calm about this. Me? I'm freaking out!!!!!!!!! I have had 4 surgeries of my own and sat thru 3 on my DS (two lazy eye surgeries and one gall bladder removal - freaked out then too). I guess he is calm because he is the one in pain and wants it to go away.

Told him that he had best schedule this soon. Primarily because if he doesn't do it soon, I will lose my mind. But also because the sooner he does it, the more time he has to recover before our scheduled Disney cruise/WDW vacay. He is going to be po'd if he has to sit on a bench while the rest of us go on EE!! Although he said he didn't care, as long as he was at WDW!

As for the idiots at the clinic....the doc he saw there told him to use hot/cold compresses and take ibuprofen and (not in these exact words) to just deal with it because he is getting old. DH is 59 and healthier than most 40 year olds. I plan on having a word with the head of the clinic and letting them know how upset I am at their handling of DH's situation.

Glad he got a better answer than the advice from the clinic! Sending you all pixies and hugs for making it through this.

I feel for him. I have spinal stenosis but in the lower back (L4/L5). Hope all goes well with the surgery.
Over 100 pounds gone. Diabetes is in remission, no more insulin. So grateful to have done weight loss surgery ( duodenal switch).

I think any serious medical condition is probably harder on the family members than the person.

I freak every time Drew has surgery (going on two dozen). By this point, those for his legs are pretty much a let's-just-get-it-done for him.

I do hope it's done soon so your DH will be recovered enough to have fun on the WDW/cruise trip.

          Oh my!

Please be sure to get a second opinion--back surgery can be pretty iffy.

          Best wishes!!

I’m sorry you are facing this surgery. Anything to do with the spine can be very scary. I also had stenosis and a cyst at my L4-L5 which drove me to 2 surgeries. Read, read, read! Especially reviews of the surgeon. My 1st surgeon was an arrogant SOB who fractured my spine then tried to tell me I had osteoporosis (I do not).

DH will have ONE opportunity to recover well. I lived on https://www.spine-health.com/ and joined the forums to ask questions. It was valuable insights and information.

sending you all kinds of pixie dust!

Sending loads of pixies for you and your DH. No surgery is fun, but it sounds as if this one will be well worth the trouble. Hoping for a speedy surgery and a remarkable recovery.

Well, surgery is scheduled for the 7th of October.

The orthopedic office that we are going to is amazing! Every doctor, nurse, PA, front desk person I have encountered has been just wonderful.
Two friends have had three shoulder surgeries, one hip surgery and one knee surgery here. I went here when I fell and broke my wrist a couple winters back. And bonus....they are one of my insurance's PPOs!!

DH had been going to a chiropractor prior to all this and he was concerned about the lack of real progress in DH's overall condition. The adjustment would help for 24 - 48 hours and then he would start losing ground and end up back in the same spot as before. Every one (except the idiot at the clinic) says that surgery is necessary. Still need to call the clinic about the idiot.

I have already started reading about stenosis and the symptoms and the treatments and everything I can find.
Luckily, DH is pretty healthy, doesn't carry ANY extra weight and is more than willing and able to do any therapy recommended after this is all over. He is calm and chill about this - but then he is the one in pain and wants it to stop. I'm the one in freak out mode - calm tho I might appear!

That might sound boring, but I think the boring stuff is the stuff I remember the most.

Tomorrow is the day! We have to be to the hospital at 5:30 am! Surgery for around 7:30/8:00.
DH will be in the hospital for 2 to 3 nights, so I won't get him back until Saturday or Sunday. AND...I may not even be able to go in a see him!!!! I am NOT thrilled about that!!!!!! Thank goodness for cell phones and Facetime!
I am going to telework for a few days - THANK YOU Sgt!!! That way I can stop working if need be for any reason.
I'll let you all know how everything goes!
