  • Question of the Day 3/11/23

    Good Saturday, everyone!

Do you consider yourself to be handy around the house? I do. I’ve been known to install a ceiling fan, for one thing.

No. I’ve never really had to. DH takes care of everything. I think it’s force of habit for him. He gutted this house and did everything himself. Electrical, plumbing, drywall, jacked it up, dug out the basement, laid block, poured concrete, roof, windows, siding, etc.

Not really, the only thing I ever did was paint walls. Holiday decorating is what I love to do.

Yes. I've installed a ceiling fan, been under the kitchen sink to unclog the trap multiple times, painted and I'm sure there are other things that I'm not thinking of. I'm lucky in that my mom and stepdad would do various things, including building a deck in the backyard, and my grandfather (mom's dad) was a true handyman he could do pretty much anything and did it all equally well. So, I grew up with people who could do and did do things that had the diy attitude. And, I miss my grandfather every time I go to do something and I'm not sure what to use or how to do it as he always knew what to use and how to do it. And, as a bonus he would have whatever tool(s) you needed to do the job and as long as they were returned to him you could borrow them for as long as you needed to. He made me a stool when I was little (2? 3?) and 40+ years later it's as sturdy and stable as the day he gave it to me.

On smaller things, definitely. Bigger projects not so much. Now that I'm older and have lost a lot of strength, I can't do as much. Right now, my DSiL is heading over to put 2 shelves back in place in my kitchen as they are just too heavy for me to maneuver.

Yes. I've rewired, run plumbing, built walls, placed siding, built decks, laid flooring, poured concrete, painted, wallpapered, installed sinks, light fixtures, garbage disposals, garage door openers, replaced lights and ceiling fans, put in staircase railing, laid tile and grouted it. The list is probably longer, but those are the things I can identify immediately.
I was the first girl in the largest school system in the state to ever take shop - and I aced it, because I already knew how to do most of it!

With simple things, yes. But my husband is super handy so I don't really need to do the more complicated things. What he doesn't know how to do, he figures out through YouTube videos. I've lost count of how many major things he's been able to do thanks to the internet. I'm sure we've saved thousands of dollars because of this.

I can mow the lawn, and plant things outside. But, when it comes to things inside the house that need to be fixed or replaced, DH does it.

Not really. When your husband's an electrician, you tend to leave most things to him...

                        Some, but not much.
That might sound boring, but I think the boring stuff is the stuff I remember the most.
